“OSF St. Joseph Medical Center has been involved with Mennonite in the exploration and development of a clinical nurse leader program since the concept emerged in 2004.”
- Deborah Smith, assistant administrator, patient services, chief nurse executive at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center.
The clinical nurse leader (CNL) sequence prepares graduates to function as leaders within complex health care environments. The practice of the CNL emphasizes nursing leadership, client outcomes management, and care environment management. The CNL is prepared as a generalist and functions at the microsystem level as provider and manager of care at the point of care delivery.
Design, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based care; as well as coordination, delegation, and supervision of care provided by the health care team are essential functions of the role.
MCN partners with regional acute care settings to offer the CNL student a focused 360 hour residency in the last semester of the program. CNL students take core and support courses with family nurse practitioner students (advanced health assessment, pathophysiology, and pharmacology) and nursing systems administration students (leadership courses) to provide a truly collegial educational experience. MCN faculty holding CNL certification provide expertise in classroom and clinical settings.
Graduates of the CNL program are eligible to take the exam for certification as a clinical nurse leader, but are not eligible for advanced practice licensure. CNL graduates have the educational preparation to teach nursing students in the state of Illinois.
